Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior learning may be granted to incoming students for:

  • Credits transferred from another accredited institution of higher learning
  • Successful completion of an exam that confirms an applicant's knowledge in a given skill/subject area
  • Knowledge and skills gained from work and life experiences
  • Substituted Moraine Park Technical College courses
  • Advanced Standing for high school coursework

Transfer Credit:
Moraine Park will accept credits from North Central accredited colleges, Wisconsin Technical College System colleges, and USAFI credits at a "C" grade or higher for course content similar to a Moraine Park course. Granting of such credit is at the discretion of the dean and cannot exceed the number of credits designated for the similar Moraine Park course. These credits will not be used to calculate GPA, and there is no charge for the granting of such credits.

Credit for Prior Learning by Exam:
Students may be eligible for this option if they: (1) have extensive high school work above the normal curriculum that makes a Moraine Park course redundant; (2) have developed the competencies via work experience; (3) have taken similar coursework at another college and cannot transfer the credit but can demonstrate the competencies; and (4) have taken similar courses in an apprenticeship, vocational, civil or military training program. Oral/written exams may be given, and proficiency exams demonstrating lab skills may also be given. There is a fee charged to administer such examinations. To be eligible to gain credit for priro learning by exam, students must have completed all other application requirements.

Credit for Prior Learning through Occupational Experience:
Students can request evaluation of skills gained from work experience, military service or other courses. They should be prepared to present documentation of these experiences. A writing proficiency examination may be required; a fee is charged for credits granted for life experience.

Advanced Standing for High School Coursework
High school students may receive technical college credit or advanced standing by successfully completing certain high school courses that are: (a) covered by articulation agreements between their high school and a technical college and (b) part of a recognized Youth Apprenticeship program.

In each case, Moraine Park Technical College will evaluate this previously completed high school coursework to determine the extent to which the coursework will apply to current program requirements, general education requirements or other graduation requirements of the specific educational program in which the student is enrolling.

  1. Tech Prep Courses
A student may be awarded credit or advanced standing for a specific technical college course or courses under the following conditions:
    • The high school courses have been identified through an articulation agreement as comparable to the specific technical college course or courses.
    • The student presents appropriate documentation of high school course(s) completion that meets the conditions stated in the articulation agreement.
  2. Youth Apprenticeship
A student who has completed a state-approved youth apprenticeship may be awarded credit for a specific Moraine Park Technical College course or courses under the following conditions:
    • All associate degree and technical diploma students to complete 25 percent of the total program through coursework taken at Moraine Park Technical College. This is to include a minimum of 25 percent of the occupational core.
    • The student presents appropriate documentation of successful completion of the youth apprenticeship program.

More complete information about advanced standing can be found in the Moraine Park Catalog and/or Student Handbook--both are  available from the Student Services Department, or by contacting any of Moraine Park's Student Services offices.
